Team 'Ana Maria Anglers' Mike Skeens 6 foot Bull shark

Well we set out yesterday in serach of bait had my live well in miles skeens truck and loaded up on live rays 12-20 in across. hit the beach and it was rough 4 ft breakers for us west coast guys is bad. after some tricky bait drops and sinking a sit inside yak 3 times we were good to go. first rod went off and miles landed this bull.

Then a hr later after putting out a fresh ray still kicking like no other the Avet 80w takes off again with no intentions of stopping after hook up he was forced to lock down that lil lever and hold on. the beast kept going stripping 400 yds off the reel then running north on the beach. the thing didnt even know it was hooked after a second wind it took off again and found a crab trap that ended it all.

Well we're down to the last 5 days of the 2013 Big Hammer Challenge and the hardest working Teams are still out there fishing hard through all kinds of difficult situations to catch that monster shark that's going to propel them to the top. Fishing the last three days most Teams around the state have noticed the bite has been off and that's due to the moderate late season cold front that came through most of Florida that always seems to give the sharks temporary lockjaw. The fishing will pick up now that the front has slipped away and we're back to normal May temperatures so hide the jacket and catch some bait it's back on.All it takes is one bait ONE SHARK.

Tired of losing sleep, tired spending too much money on gas to fish those far away spots ,drinking too many Redbulls to stay awake on the long drive home at 4 am, and fishing through the cold ,the heat ,the wet and sticky conditions with sometimes smelly wet clothes is part of what we do and the HARD CORE :) :) DO IT AGAIN AND AGAIN and the champions don't give up they understand the sacrifice to become the BEST. 8-) 8-)

Watch the beach cams for your area, study the surf reports and you will learn to find the sharks by being observant..Remember as the winds start to subside and the near shore waters calm they start to clear up are less murky & the bait schools move back close in with sharks of all types not far behind them . If you have friends that are charter fishermen, boat captains or commercial fishermen they are a valuable source of information for everything to help you get into the sharks.Professional seaman can give you information on weather, sea conditions ,bait movement and local shark activity that can enable the interested fishermen to become a top notch land-based shark hunter.Good luck to all anglers and please remember SAFETY FIRST.

Jimmy, get that monster!

I lost my first monster to a buoy on Monday! The 10/0 was locked down and the line was peelin off like it was in free spool. He ran out to sea, then when I started gettin some line back, he swam back in shore and then turned south. it was a tug of war for a few minutes as I felt the line pulling in sync with the movement of the buoy. I gave him some slack, he started runnin again and burned that line against the rope.

Sorry you lost a nice one Gucci you'll get em!! Went fishing last night with shark fever Ryan and my friend nick. Had a nice variety of big baits ajs, stingrays, bonitos and big bluefish but unfortunately no takers on this night, we were ready to put some teamwork together and land some nice sharks but didn't happen. Not giving up though will be back at it for the next 4 days straight still have some big baits left that I hope will get eatin by that ONE!! Good luck everyone down the stretch!!!

Team 'Hammer and the Phenoms'
# 1 Jd hammer 5ft 10 tiger
# 2 Jimmy dean 6ft 7 bull

This picture cracked me up  Hammer Break Dances for tiger sharks

This next picture exemplifies an important aspect that many teams let fly over their head in this tournament out of the sheer competitiveness. Many teams this tournament have members scattered far and wide and don't fish together, these short-handed men and women that have the respect and courtesy to get together and help each other out are the true champions of the Big Hammer Challenge; they keep and protect the sport of land-based shark fishing for generations to come and people like this should be commended as ambassadors of our sport. Great job everybody that knows what I'm talking about and keep up the good work!

Just an average fisherman.
